Human technology
We believe technology should be a convivial tool, empowering individuals and communities to thrive. Unfortunately, the embedding of technology in capitalism, the tech industry, turned humans into an exploitable resource–people became the product.
Codefreude is a non-profit (i.e. code for joy) effort to craft alternative solutions that are human-centered. We base our work on three pillars:
- Free software: Our software is free and open source software, respecting users' freedom and community. People can study, modify, and distribute the software without restrictions.
- Community: We can only build solutions that cater to the needs of all people if we work together. Therefore, we foster a culture of collaboration and mutual support.
- Accessibility: We make our software accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or abilities. We believe that technology should be a tool for empowerment, not a barrier to inclusion.
- Standards: We adopt open standards and promote interoperability to ensure that our solutions can be used by anyone, anywhere.
We build on technologies (e.g. Codeberg, Zig, Mastodon) maintained by foundations that align with our values and principles.
Pedro Piñera brought Codefreude to life in February 2025 as a life-long project to restore the balance between technology and humanity.
